Dental Bridges

Can't flash your best smile? Our dentists at Clayburn Dental provide our Abbotsford patients dental bridges to help restore the form, function and aesthetic look of their smiles.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) restoration used to replace missing teeth.

A dental bridge is made up of two crowns, one on each tooth on either side of the gap (these two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth) and artificial teeth in between. These artificial teeth are called pontics. Dental bridges can be supported by either natural teeth or dental implants.

There are several types of bridges. You and your dentist will discuss the best options for your particular case.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges:

  • replace missing teeth and promote proper bite
  • restore your ability to properly chew and speak
  • improve the aesthetic look of your smile
  • maintain the shape of your face
  • prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position

Treatment Process

Getting a dental bridge usually requires two or more visits with the dentist. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression (mold) is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next appointment.

At the second visit, you permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. Occasionally your dentist may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new bridge. The new bridge will be permanently cemented at a later time.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of the treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and intermittent visits (if needed) to Clayburn Dental in Abbotsford will aid in the life of your new permanent bridge.
